Founded by Braizahn Jones, Umami Bass is a workshop initiative centered around sound, listening, and collaborative musical study. Originally developed through workshops in Kyoto, Japan in partnership with Contrabass Shop Kadomoto, the project brings together bassists from diverse backgrounds to cultivate environments grounded in depth, curiosity, refinement, and meaningful artistic exchange.

Umami Bass exists to make deep, high-level musical study more accessible to serious and curious artists, regardless of geography or background.

Rooted in traditions of intensive listening, refinement, collaboration, and artistic clarity, the workshops are designed to create environments where participants can engage directly with ideas and approaches that are often difficult to access outside of major musical institutions and cultural centers.

Rather than treating pedagogy as the transfer of isolated technical information, Umami Bass celebrates integrated musical development: the relationship between sound, physicality, rhythm, listening, and artistic intention.

Through intensive study, performance, and collaborative exchange, participants hopefully develop greater freedom, awareness, and clarity within both their playing and musical thinking.
